Google‘s “Camping” ad, which debuted on July 25 and has aired regularly during theOlympics broadcast, is the most-effective technology spot in the last 90 days, according to the ad research firm Ace Metrix.

Here’s the ad.

I like this ad. I like it a lot. I like it because rather than showing us stylized images of the product on a pedestal, it shows us how we can use a piece of technology to connect with people who are important in out lives.

This minute-long ad shows a father and son on a camping trip. Dad takes along his new nexus 7 which he uses as a compass, a flashlight, an book and a games platform.

“Google has taken their strong emotional appeal and married that with strong product demonstration,” said Jonathan Symonds, Ace Metrix’s exec VP-marketing.

It’s not the technology that matters, it’s the effect is has on our lives and how it helps us to connect with others that matters.

Google’s Nexus 7 ‘Camping ad scored 662 out of a possible 950, which Apple’s new ads —  MaydayLabor Day and Basically — scored between a bottom ranking and upper-middle ranking, depending on the ad.

Apple needs to pick up its ad game, because right now Google is hitting all the right buttons.
